Just Focus and Do It
How many times have you told yourself "TODAY I GET SHIT DONE" only to lose focus and end the day on an "I'll get it done tomorrow" empty promise?  I would be lying if I said it's never happened to me, and I'm pretty damn positive I'm not alone in that basket of lost focus.  As I got older the see-saw effect of good days and bad days kept growing, and just FYI the bad days far outnumbered the good.  There was about a 3 year period where I felt like I was running in a hamster wheel.  Have you ever had that feeling?  Like you are continuously putting forth effort but seeing no progress in your life, job, health, etc.  I learned that the only person that was making things difficult in my life was ME!  Once I opened my eyes to the truth it was just a matter of figuring out little ways to make mountains look like mole hills. In all honesty there's no magical cape of focus we can put on when we wake up.  What we have to do is work towards the task at hand.  What is it that you want to accomplish for the day?  Week?  Month?  EVEN THE YEAR?  Whether it's trying to get a promotion at work, better grades in school, or lose some pounds around the midsection, it all comes down to the same thing: CAN YOU FOCUS ON WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?  Once you tell yourself that you are ready, we can start implementing little things to help you stay on track.  Here are 4 tips that I used and still use to this day to help me when I feel my mind is wandering and goals are being fumbled around.
  1. WRITE DOWN THE REASON/REASONS OF WHY YOU HAVE TAKEN ON THE TASK AT HAND: If you have something facing you day in and day out in your own writing, mindset, words telling you WHY you have taken this challenge it makes it that much harder to fail. It's easy to say "I'll get to it later" it's another thing when you're seeing your own words telling yourself to be strong, take it one step at a time, and to persevere even on the toughest days!
  2. DO NOT MULTI-TASK: It's extremely easy to multi-task and feel like you are getting sooooo much work accomplished.  But more often than not we spend too much time on a task that takes away from the overall goal!  For example: You wanted to prepare your meals for the next day, but you decide the carpet needs vacuuming as well.  Now the days finishing up and you only have half the meals prepared and your body is too tired to finish up.  So what do you do?  You say you'll finish it in the morning, but what usually happens is you eat the meals already prepared and end up getting some fast-food later in the day because you have to multi-task some more!  Make a priority list and work your way down!  Once the specific task is done than you can move on.  Finding the mental strength to get ONE task is tough enough as it is, don't try to kill four birds with one stone.
  3. Work on that FOCUS ENDURANCE: Even with some of our simplest chores we lose focus.  It's not surprising since we live in such a social media driven age that we tend to start a task only to continuously check our twitter or Facebook for messages or comments.  Doing this is showing us that we can't even put a few minutes of undisturbed energy towards something!  Choose a task and exert 30 minutes of undisturbed time towards it!  It can be anything from reading a book, to writing out a workout routine.  Whatever it is FOCUS on it for 30minutes.  Once you feel that it becomes easy, bump it to an hour.  Soon enough you will have trained your brain to give undivided attention towards the task YOU choose to complete without it feeling like a chore!
  4. EXERCISE! Personally I feel that after a good workout whether it be weight lifting, cardio, or just a playful jog with my dog in the park, wake my body and mind up to start the day off right! Just like some folks feel they need caffeine to wake up and focus, EXERCISE can be your new cup of joe! Get your blood flowing and release those chemicals in your brain that say "WAKE UP, today IS the day we get shit done!"
These are just a handful of tips I implement into my life to help me stay on track. In all honesty there are sooooo many different ways to keep your noggin sharp, and some peoples methods might not be another persons cup of tea. But when it comes down to it, what do you have to lose!? Step out of your comfort zone because obviously staying their hasn't gotten you where you want to go! Take risks, make mistakes, and become stronger by destroying every obstacle that comes your way! I'm Sean Sarantos and I challenge you to Live Like a BEAST.
